Locate and identify your device's MAC address

The MAC address is a unique identifier for each device on a network. At UIndy the primary reason individuals will need a MAC address is to register or identify devices to the UIndy wired or wireless network.

The following article will look at a number of the most common system types and guide you through locating and identifying the MAC address of these systems. If your device is not listed below please refer to the manufacturer's website.

The following devices are not supported on the UIndy network: wireless printers, personal routers, access points, and Google Chromecast.

Windows 10

The following are a series of steps designed to identify and locate your MAC addresses on Windows 10.

  1. Click the Windows Search magnifying glass.
  2. Enter Command Prompt.
  3. Click on the Command Prompt Desktop app to launch.

  1. Once the program has launched enter getmac/v.
  2. Press Enter on your keyboard.

  1. A series of rows and columns are generated and now provide you with an Ethernet (wired) and a Wi-Fi (wireless) MAC address in the Physical Address column.
  2. Wireless MAC address will be identified as Wi-Fi.
  3. Wired MAC address will be identified as Ethernet.

MacOS

The following are a series of steps designed to identify and locate your MAC address on MacOS.

  1. From your Apple dock click on System Preferences.

  1. To find a wireless MAC address first click Wi-Fi in the left column.
  2. Click Advanced.

  1. Click on the Hardware tab.
  2. You will see your wireless MAC address listed simply as MAC Address.

  1. In order to obtain a wired MAC address, first click on Ethernet in the left column.
  2. Click Advanced.

iOS Mobile

This section is dedicated to explaining how to locate and identify the MAC address of iOS mobile devices. This includes the iPod, iPhone, and iPad line of products.

  1. First tap Settings on the Home screen of your iOS mobile device.

Android

This section is dedicated to explaining how to locate and identify the MAC address of Android mobile devices, including phones and tablets.

Note: These instructions are assumed to be general and usable for a large variety of Android devices. However, due to the number of Android mobile devices we are not able to ensure these instructions work for all Android devices. In the event these instructions do not work for your device, it is recommended that you review your phone manufacturer's website.

  1. First locate and tap the Settings on your Android device.

  2. Tap Wi-Fi to bring up more options.
