EXTREME WEATHER POLICY
There may be times when you must cancel an in-person class due to weather conditions, particularly if a majority of your students don’t live on campus. First try to switch to a virtual format if you can. Also monitor our University’s emergency communication system (texts, emails) to determine whether classes have been cancelled or delayed across the board. The campus extreme weather policy is located here.
ILLNESS/CLASS CANCELLATION
Should you be unable to attend class due to a personal emergency or unforeseen circumstances, please contact your department Chair or Program Director as soon as possible. If it is during the regular work day, you can ask your Administrative Assistant or a colleague to post a note on your classroom door, and follow-up with your students as quickly as possible via email. If possible, you may offer students an e-learning day or alternative learning experience. You may be asked to fill out an “Absence from Campus Form”, which is located here. Please note that you should complete this form for a planned absence and provide an alternative method of course coverage, such as a modified form of delivery, a student work day, a guest speaker from your department or the Professional Edge Center, etc.
HELPING STUDENTS TO AVOID ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT
The easiest way to help students avoid academic misconduct is by discouraging it from the very beginning. For example, to limit opportunities for plagiarism, make your assignments specific to your particular course or to the course readings rather than allowing generic approaches that are easily downloaded (like “Write a paper about a topic in sociology you find interesting”). You can also ask students to write their papers in Google Docs and share them with you so that you can review their timestamps.
Brightspace offers an integrated version of Turnitin.com which you can learn more about here. You are also welcome to share this video with your students or post it into your class Brightspace page. It helps them understand how to properly cite and paraphrase as well as how to avoid committing academic misconduct while using Artificial Intelligence
DEALING WITH ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT
Unfortunately, academic misconduct occasionally happens. If you suspect a student of misconduct, immediately contact your supervisor or a knowledgeable colleague for guidance. Make sure that you collect as much relevant information as possible, including but not necessarily limited to the student’s explanation and perspective on the event. Some issues can be resolved by addressing the issue directly with the student before initiating formal proceedings at a higher level. Here, you will find the process by which academic misconduct is reported and the form for reporting it.
