Facilitating Learning

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Teaching today may be much different than the experience you had as a student. Far from just delivering a lecture, current pedagogy focuses on facilitating student learning through creative activities, projects, and assessments. The Faculty Academy is always happy to help you learn more. We’re available for personal consultations, support through tech guides and videos, and teaching-focused workshops.

FIELD TRIPS/TRANSPORTING STUDENTS

Field trips can be an exciting and engaging experience for students. We recommend including any field trips in your course syllabus at the beginning of the semester so that students have adequate time to plan for them. We do not recommend that you personally drive students to other locations or organize student carpooling. Please note that the university’s automobile insurance will not cover your private vehicle, even if you were driving on University business

UINDY WIFI

Review instructions on how to connect to the WiFi while at UIndy? Difficulties connecting can be addressed by contacting our Help Desk

ACCESS TO SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE

In the course of your work, you (or your students) may need access to various types of software, such as the Microsoft Office Suite. Review a comprehensive list of software the university currently licenses.  Need a university owned device? Check out the guidance on how to check out a university laptop or bluetooth player. You can use this equipment (or your own) to connect to a flat panel or use an LCD projector in your classroom.

LIBRARY RESOURCES

Whether you need library support for yourself or your students, our librarians are available to support you! Our library offers a number of resources for all. To get started, our librarians have helpfully put together a guide for new faculty members.

SERVICE LEARNING

At the University of Indianapolis, we focus on education for impact. The Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement can help you integrate this high-impact learning practice into your courses. Their resources for community partners, faculty, and students make service learning at UIndy virtually seamless!

CAMPUS SCANTRON MACHINES

The University has Scantron machines located at a few different spots on campus, which you can use to score multiple choice assessments.  Check out Scantron machine location on campus.  Note that Scantron forms are available from the Administrative Assistants in those areas.

MAKING COPIES

If you would like to make photocopies for your class, please check with your Chair or Program Director on the proper procedure. It is usually cheaper to make copies internally rather than send them to our campus print shop, or digital materials may be able to be placed online instead. The use of copy machines on campus requires a departmental copy code; alternatively, you can give electronic files to the Administrative Assistant for printing.

ASSIGNING GRADES

While your department or college may have a standardized grading scale, the university does not. We are, however, required to post at least some student grades at regular intervals on the Learning Management System, Brightspace. We recommend that all grades be posted by no more than one week after the assignment’s due date, when possible
Twice during the semester (at midterm and after final exams), you will submit your student grades to the registrar. You may do so on Banner (at my.uindy.edu) or by exporting them through Brightspace.

DESIGNING ONLINE AND HYBRID COURSES

All faculty who are designing online or hybrid courses (that is, distance education courses) are required to complete the Applying the Quality Matters Rubric workshop. These workshops are provided to faculty free of charge. Contact the Faculty Academy to get information about the next time the workshop will be offered.
