Upgrading Your Mac to Monterey Operating System

If you use specific software titles you will need to check with software vendors to ensure that the software titles you need are compatible with Monterey.

If you choose to upgrade to Monterey, there are precautions you must take BEFORE upgrading:

  • Reboot your computer prior to beginning any upgrade process to:
    • Resolve potential password issues before the upgrade.
      • If you cannot log in after rebooting, try logging in with your previous password.  If you can log in, you may be prompted to log in again.  Try this with your new password.
      • If neither of the above work, please contact the Help Desk, and do not perform the upgrade until the password issue is resolved.
    • Ensure that minimal programs are running in the background.
  • Back up your hard drive (all files, documents, etc.).
    • Severe or catastrophic data loss could occur following an operating system upgrade. If this happens and you do not have a backup of your files/data, we can attempt a recovery.  This will take several days and may or may not be successful.
  • Make sure your computer is plugged in and charging BEFORE starting the upgrade.
  • Allow plenty of time for the upgrade to complete; you will not be able to use your computer while the upgrade is in process which could take several hours.
